This black ornate wall mirror pairs classical carved detailing with a deep matte black finish, creating a piece that feels both traditional and quietly contemporary. Part of our Monksilver Collection range, a collection that sells consistently well with our living room and hallway customers.
Design & Materials
The frame is built from solid hardwood overlaid with casting resin mouldings, giving the ornate scrollwork at each corner real depth and definition. Acanthus-leaf motifs flow into the corner cartouches, while a fine beaded bead-and-reel detail runs the length of each rail — a hallmark of antique-inspired framing. The finish is a smooth, uniform matte black that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, lending the frame a sculptural presence against lighter walls. Inside the frame sits a bevelled mirror glass with a clean, wide bevel that catches the light and adds a subtle sense of depth. In our experience, this combination of an ornate black frame with bevelled glass works particularly well in rooms where you want drama without excessive shine.
Size & Placement
At 110 cm tall and 79 cm wide, this is a generously sized rectangular wall mirror without being overwhelming. Hung in portrait orientation, it sits beautifully above a sideboard or console table in a hallway, giving the impression of height and pulling the eye upward. Flip it to landscape and it becomes a handsome overmantle mirror — at 79 cm high it fills the chimney breast nicely above a standard mantelpiece. The 6 cm frame depth gives it a substantial profile when viewed from the side, so it reads as a deliberate design choice rather than an afterthought. This vintage black wall mirror suits period properties with panelled walls, but it works equally well in a modern scheme where you want a single decorative accent to anchor the room. Pair it with warm wood furniture or brass hardware for an antique feel, or set it against charcoal or navy walls for a tonal, layered look. With a flat bottom edge, it can also lean against a wall on a deep shelf or mantel if you prefer a more relaxed arrangement.
Hanging & Installation
The mirror comes fitted with four D-loop fixings on the back, positioned so you can hang it in either portrait or landscape orientation. Position your wall screws to line up with the centre of the corresponding D-loops and hang the mirror directly — do not use string, wire, or chain. At 10 kg, this is a manageable weight for one person to lift, though having a second pair of hands makes alignment much easier. Wall screws and rawl plugs are not included, so choose fixings appropriate to your wall type: standard plugs and screws for solid masonry, or dedicated plasterboard anchors if you are fixing into a stud wall.
For a clean, flush-wall finish, we recommend pairing this mirror with our heavy-duty mirror fittings kit — a hook-and-loop back-plate system designed to sit flat against solid frames.
